Choosing the Right Collar Size for Your HomeSafe Tracker
This guide is designed to help ensure you select the right size collar for your furry friend.
Determining the appropriate collar size will depend on whether or not your pet will be wearing the HomeSafe® Smart Tracker. This guide includes sizing instructions to accommodate collars with or without the Tracker attached, reference the headlines below for instructions specific to you and your pet.
My Dog Will Be Wearing a HomeSafe®Smart Tracker On Their DocuPet Collar
Lucky pooch! A new toy and accessory are coming their way - someone’s been good!
Before measuring your dog’s neck or thinking about sizing, let's review how the Smart Tracker attaches to a dog’s collar and the impact this will have on the selected size.
The Smart Tracker goes UNDER your dog’s collar - this approach provides a seamless design, secure fit, and improved heart and respiratory rate readings. Therefore, you need approximately two inches in extra length to accommodate the device. Take a look at the below image to see how the tracker affixes to a dog’s collar.
It’s best to attach the tracker to a single strap so you will want to select a collar size that is extended far enough to accommodate the tracker without the strap being doubled up. See what we mean below.
BEST OKAY WORST
All of our collars will list the neck size range that the collar will fit. Therefore, follow this process when selecting a collar:
- Measure your pet’s neck. You can do this by:
- Using soft measuring or sewing tape
- Using a string and then measure the length of the string with a ruler or tape measure
- Remove your dog's current collar and stretch it out flat then measure it
- Add two inches (5.08cm) to the measurement above to accommodate the tracker
- Review the collar sizes available for the style you wish to select
- You should find that your measurement target will fit in two of our available sizes. Choose the smaller of the two sizes. For example if your target measurement is 14.5 inches (37cm), a size small or medium could work, but we would suggest you opt for the small size unless your dog is still growing or their neck size varies throughout the course of the year due to weight gain/loss and/or haircuts.
